I never imagined that I would be serving in the capacity as a leader in dental education- but that’s exactly where this past Saturday found me. I’ve been asked to be the Study Club Leader for the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Dawson Academy.
Over four meetings, I’ll be getting together with other dentists and their team members and helping and guiding them through complete care dentistry. This recent Saturday was our first meeting- and it was great! My team members Edith and Gaby were instrumental in pulling everything together, so that we could provide a cohesive and interactive session. And I have to thank AI Orthodontics for giving us free use of their space as a venue for the meeting.
If you had asked me years ago if I ever thought that I would be in a position in which I would be standing in front of a group of people and presenting information- I would have said NO WAY!
But here I am- and I suppose that this is a good challenge for me, because I’m being pushed outside of my comfort zone, which I think is important. Too much complacency is never a good thing- and by putting myself out there, I know I risk failing- but the payoff of being able to impart whatever knowledge I have to others is huge- and so it’s worth it.
I’m still not comfortable getting up in front of a room and teaching others, but I think that’s something I have to learn to work with. I also think it forces me to examine what I know and if I know it well enough to teach. So in a sense, I’m constantly learning and reinforcing what I know.
I hope that if given an option to do something that may be an unknown to you and a little scary- but you know that there could be immense benefit not only to yourself but to others- you take the chance. You would be surprised at how things will just open up for you if done with the right intention- the world will conspire with you and not against you!
